A narrow focus changes the story

Milledgeville, Ga. has been the town to talk about lately. News vans filled the parking spots downtown, while journalist and camera crews roamed the streets looking for anyone to talk to about the incident with Ben Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger, the Pitsburg Steelers quarterback, has a lake house near Milledgeville and decided to hit up the Milledgeville bars a few weeks ago. It is alleged that while he was at one bar, he sexually assaulted a student, and that is the story everyone is after.

Reporters zoomed in on the chaos caused by a celebrity and lost the outstanding story of the small college in Milledgeville--the incredible community among the students, the beautiful campus, and quality of the college.

On a beautiful day, the GCSU front campus is swarming with students. Frisbees are flying, bikes are cruising, and blankets cover the ground as students sit and chat. Every student can find a group of friends to sit with. There is no separation on front campus because it is a place where everyone belongs.

GCSU has a great community among its students, and that is more than evident on a beautiful day or in the midst of chaos.

Georgia College has also built an outstanding reputation for its academic quality. Each semester, it is harder for upcoming freshmen to get accepted because the standards are higher and more students are applying. It is an honor to be a Georgia College Bobcat.

Weeks ago the reporters focused on the story that everyone wanted to hear, yet there is so much more to Milledgeville than an unfortunate incident on a Thursday night.

GCSU and it's students did an outstanding job dealing with the Roethlisberger occurrence. It was a public relations crisis management handled well. Students did not mindlessly talk to reporters to simply be in the spotlight, nor did they freely throw out the name of the young girl involved. GCSU students were respectful and lived up to the reputation of the outstanding college in Milledgeville, Ga.

The reporters strictly focused on the events, which caused them to lose sight of a great story.
